  • from George P. Wood -- TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : This novel has everything that made me like the Longmire series in the first place ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Madqdog -- Could be used as a Travelogue : This may be THE finest of the Longmire series: witty, touching, wry, and filled with intriguing history. Johnson is skilled at weaving history into his novels. "Next to Last Stand" takes it one step further in his detailed exploration of the Little Big Horn Battlefield, Story, Ten Sleep, Big Horn, and Durant (Buffalo). The brick signage where the Wavers congregate is truly there on... yep, you guessed it... Fort Street. The description of the Brinton Museum in Big Horn is like being there. Like Vic, my wife and I have passed the Big Horn Battlefield on I-90 many times in our travels of the American West but Vic's word "haunting" is so very true on that ridge, about 5 minutes above the Interstate. Most visitors to Wyoming head directly to Cody and Jackson, missing the fascinating region around Sheridan and Bighorn. Craig Johnson brings these areas to life. I can't wait to return. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris -- Another Longmire mystery to enjoy : Happily, Johnson has treated us to another fine Longmire mystery. This book feels more akin to his short stories than many of his novels (especially the recent arc that concludes with Walt's trip to Mexico). The plot revolves around a recently deceased veteran at a local VA home, a million dollars found in a boot box in his room, and a perhaps valuable painting...or two. Sheriff Longmire and his deputies and friends launch an investigation, taking the reader on a trip into the art world and the history of Custer's Last Stand. The writing is vintage Johnson, humorous, detailed, and awash in his love of the people and places he's created. In this case, he adds his love of the topic (the history of Custer's unfortunate end) and a bevy of interesting (and equally charming) supporting characters. The band of retired veterans called "wavers" are a treat, and I hope we'll drop in on them again sometime. All in all, this is a thoroughly enjoyable 'page turner' that might keep you up past your bedtime! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Shelley D -- A little dry : Heavy on the history; light on the action and human interest that usually drive Johnson's Longmire novels. Definitely not one of his best. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Bibliophile -- Terrible. : Not at all like previous Longmire books. I wonder if Craig Johnson is still writing them or if he has hired someone to continue the series. I won't be reading any more of them. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2020 )
  • from John S -- VINE VOICE : Longmire is back! ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Ted Hessler -- Next to worst of Longmire books : I’ve read them all and this one is not up to par. You wait months for the next book and are through reading it in one day, so you hope it is great. This one was hokey and not as good as the others. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. MacInnes -- A warrior with the soul of a poet : Walt Longmire is a man to aspire to. He has his flaws, but is relentless in the pursuit of justice. A man true to his code, a great friend an a feared enemy. With the support of his close friend and his stalwart deputy, Walt succeeds where many would give up of fail. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from sharon stolz -- Awesome Author : I have read all of Craig Johnson‘s books love his writing style. Craig Johnson has a way of using his characters in many different ways the pulls you right into the story. It doesn’t take long and you’re right into it and can’t put the book down before you know it you’re done looking for the next book ( Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rick Clark -- Worth the wait! : A Christmas gift from Santa. Long time Longmire fan. Books are superior to TV series IMO. About half way through the tale so won't give anything away. Let's just say...boy howdy! ( Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from susan Charles -- The best ever stories : LOVE Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire....this was a very good story. Sure hope he never stops writing about Longmire! Can’t wait for the next story. ( Reviewed in Canada on September 24, 2020 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from SkeetsP -- Not his best : Seems like he dashed this one off. I can’t believe the positive reviews unless they are just hoping he gets out of an slump. Loyal readers deserve better. ( Reviewed in Canada on September 29, 2020 )
